Can Prayer Change Us? SJT Video

Prayer Changes MarriageIt’s time for another “Sloppy Joe Time” and today I’m talking about how crazy it was for me and my hubby to think we could avoid a messy marriage without making a commitment to pray together daily. Find out what this one small act did for our marriage and what it can do for yours too!

What hindrances are you facing in making prayer with your spouse a daily priority?

How have you seen praying with your mate change your marriage?

Also, I’d love it if you’d check out my new Connect U page that gives details about an upcoming marriage workshop that my husband, Gary and I are conducting in Lynchburg, Virginia. We’d love it if you’d pray for us on this particular occasion, but also as we begin to offer more of these workshops in the weeks and months ahead. 🙂

  3. Praying together is something my husband and I have struggled with, especially over the last 10 years. Work schedules, exhaustion, children…they all can cause issues in that area. This is something we need to work on for sure.

    1. It’s harder to do and more rare among Christian couples than we like to think. And you’re right about all of that “life-stuff” that gets in the way, not to mention, the challenge of starting a new habit. It’s something you’ve both got to be committed to or it will feel forced or fall off the grid. Thanks for coming by and adding to the discussion, Barbie! I’m always glad to see you in the comment section!

What a great post, and wonderful suggestions to overcome the common obstacles to marital prayer.

And it is so necessary. The founder of Covenant House, the shelter for runaways in New York, told potential volunteers, straight away, that he required three hours of prayer for them daily; and that it wasn’t negotiable. They’d need it to deal with the things they saw.

Somehow I didn’t realize that you’re from Buffalo! Last time I was there, there was rather a nice French restaurant…I think it was called “Daffodil’s”…do you know of it?

    1. Thanks, Andrew. You’d of thought that my husband and I would have discovered this years ago, but sadly it took us about 24 years to realize it! I’ve heard about people who commit to praying for that length of time each morning. I can’t say that’s what my husband and I do–even in our own quiet times. But I will say that prayer has become a bigger priority in my life overall. And I’ve been amazed at how it’s improved my attitude in just about every area of my life.

I’m not from Buffalo, Andrew. I got my mug from a new story in my town (Edwardsville, IL–near St. Louis) called Gingham Buffalo. I know it’s hard to catch all that I’m saying–especially since I include the subtitles. You kind of have to watch it a couple of times to get the gist. Thanks for coming by, my friend! I prayed for you this morning and think of you often!

  5. Fun tattoo! You never cease to surprise me! I witnessed a beautiful example of a couple praying together yesterday at my own house. My younger son, who lives with me, had his fiancee visiting for the weekend. They began their morning on the back deck with their Bibles open reading scripture together and discussing it. My heart was full at the sight and knowing how pleased God was for this time with them.
I will be praying for your upcoming marriage workshop! Will you be coming through Cincinnati?

    1. And I want to say for the record, I didn’t do my video from that angle to point out my tattoo. Actually I’ve kind of kept that under wraps because I didn’t do it to show it off. It’s my own personal reminder and the verse (Isaiah 44:5) just really capped off the need to “write it on my hand (or in my case, wrist).”

And I’m right there with you, Mary, marveling at your son and his fiance! What a beautiful thing to behold! They are starting things off the right way. I hope they keep it up! Thank you also for your prayers. We have one coming up this Friday as well, so please be in prayer on that day as well. Thanks so much for coming by and encouraging as well as praying for me, Mary. I have you in my weekly prayers as well and today was my day to pray for you! I do hope things are going well with your “second chapter” of life. God’s got big plans for you, girlfriend!

  6. Lovely video! I don’t think praying together would go down well in my household LOL. However, I can certainly imagine that doing together something so intimate would be very nourishing.

I’ll be sorry to see the end of SJT, but I’m sure your new series will be just as good 🙂

  7. I needed this visit today, Beth. How few of us believing couples actually commit to this basic spiritual practice. What an invitation. I’ll be sharing this with my man …

And maybe I’ll get a tattoo?

    ;-}

Can’t wait to see you guys in action! Looking forward to your new series! Love you guys together!
