How Your Marriage Factors into Your Bible Study Habit And Linkup

Bible Study

Whenever we slow ourselves to be with God through daily prayer and Bible study, we will inevitably face distractions, discouragements and difficulties that pull us away from this pursuit. #spiritualwarfare

It’s never easy to start and maintain a good habit but it’s so much harder at the start of this very important sacred habit.

Bible Study

So how do we start and keep it going?

One of the main reasons I wanted to do this series on how to Slow, Know and Grow in your walk with the Lord is because it has been so incredibly important to my marriage. I “know” that my attitudes and behaviors in marriage have been drastically impacted by my time with God and His word.

3 Tips for Keeping and Maintaining this Sacred Habit . . .

1. Remember and realize it heals and benefits your marriage.

As I spent time in God’s word and applied it daily (still do!), God worked/works in my heart to improve my attitudes and behaviors in marriage. For me, this has resulted in my “marriage”not just my attitude or behavior—improving in monumental ways as well. Truthfully . . .

[bctt tweet=”Without my pursuit of God in the day-to-day, I probably would’ve divorced my husband. #Truth” username=”BethSteffaniak”]

God was the One holding my marriage together, healing my marriage, and knitting my heart to my husband in many mysterious ways BECAUSE OFand not just in spite of—the marriage messes and hurts I had experienced. The Lord used them all to refine my heart.

[bctt tweet=”God used my marriage messes to refine me and heal my marriage! Find out how He can do that for yours at MM! #Bible #Christ #heal” username=”BethSteffaniak”]

One more quick note here, if you are so discouraged in your marriage that you don’t care anymore whether God heals it or not, then use the motivation of your children to keep you going in your habit. You’ll be a better parent and influence on them if you make God Your constant Influencer!

2. Seek God’s strength when it gets difficult and you want to give up.

And it WILL get difficult! Expect this! Especially if you have little ones underfoot or an overloaded and/or ever-changing schedule. But if you pray each day that the Lord would strengthen your ability to remain true to this new habit, He will provide a way.

When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. Psalm 91:15

It might mean getting up extra early (before everyone else), or praying on your drive to work, or carving out 5 minutes to read notes from a Bible study or devotional while you eat your lunch, or perhaps doing this instead of watching TV some evening. 😉

These are all simple, quiet moments that God will point out for you to repurpose in your day.

Speaking of this all-important pursuit, I have a free 6-Week Bible study in 1 Peter, Holy Living—Wholly Living,” that I am offering through Facebook* starting on April 2, 2017. Bear in mind, my notes only take 5 minutes to read each day. 🙂

Study Bible

And if you have the time and desire, this study also offers a study method for digging deeper into each day’s readings as well.

If you’d like to be added to this group, contact me either through the comments below, or email me at messymarriage@gmail.com. For more details on this group experience and study, click on my Bible Study page.

3. Ask for the support of godly friends.

This could mean going through your Bible study in a group setting or simply asking a friend to hold you accountable in some way.

Your accountability partner only has to text or email you a simple question each week—“How are you doing on your study habit?” Give him or her a score between 1 and 10. This little bit of accountability can remind and motivate you to stick with it.

I have several accountability partners in my life—holding my feet to the fire. And it’s been nothing short of phenomenal! #Marie #Marlena #Pam #Hubby

Thank you to all of my encouragers in my faith! You make a huge difference for me!

What has helped you to persevere in the habit of your time with God?

What is getting in the way of making time with God your daily habit?

I’m in a space where I’m reshaping my time. I put quite a few new things on my plate recently, but when I finish, I would like to do your bible study :). That time spent with Him does make a difference – and it sounds as if “wholly living” is something I am trying to do right now.

Great post, Beth, and I’m grateful to you for sharing these lessons and suggestions. I’m sure many marriages will benefit.

There are a couple of suggestions that I might make, which, those ancillary to the direct question of spending time with the Almighty, do help foster a nurturing atmosphere for the practice:

    1) Partake only of entertainment resources that are uplifting and positive in the sense of turning your mind toward God. The recent film “Hacksaw Ridge” is an excellent example, as it is a very clear testament of faith under the worst conditions imaginable.

    2) Don’t use profanity. I used to be able to blister paint with my language, but have found that it drove me further from communion with the Lord. Not because it was ‘bad’, but for two more prosaic reasons:

    a) The use of profanity is discourteous, and one can hardly invite the divine into a heart that takes no notice of social graces.

    b) Profanity is unimaginative and primitive; the sublime dignity of the Almighty can hardly feel comfortable in a crude hovel.

  7. It’s pretty amazing what your personal Bible Study time will do to your marriage. There is a peace I can’t explain and I see things differently. I’m enjoying my current study of the book of Judges.

  8. The first thing I thought of as I read your testimony how spending time with the Lord has made your marriage better is this…I can attest as you spend more time and make the attempts with a pure heart to be in The Word and work (don’t like that word) at your God-relationship the more grace becomes active in your life…I want to pursue the Lord – I want to chase and fight for my morning time and when I do that? His grace becomes so much more prevalent to me. Hope this makes sense to someone!!!

  9. I know my marriage has improved since I’ve been working on all this.

Helpers: Having the Bible always near me. I have PocketSword on my phone so I can
always “dip in”; I also have a little NT+Psalms that I can carry round in my
briefcase or rucksack for longer reading. I also keep in mind that, like learning
a language, even five minutes is worth it and that entering this space every day is
    important.

Hinderer: my memory 😀 I like to pray last thing but often forget (I still haven’t
“come out” to my wife). I’ve recently given myself something specific to pray
about and since then have remembered to pray every night. In future I might gather
things to pray about during the day (“I will pray about that tonight”).

    Beth,
I have to start my day with reading God’s word and usually a devotional. It sets the tone for my day. That doesn’t mean my day will magically be all hunky dory, but it can keep a day that might head south from completely going down the drain. It’s SO important in my marriage and my relationships. I’ve been reading in James about guarding my tongue – talk about a “must read” for any marriage or relationship! Great post…
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

  11. Knowledge of my own deep need keeps me going. Truth is the only thing that keeps me from believing all the lies my brain wants me to accept every day.

  12. Any habit takes time, practice, discipline and the knowledge that there are days you will want to quit. I love the idea of accountability partners to keep you on track in studying God’s word. I have never had one before and this is partially due to believing I could handle it on my own. Ha! Who am I fooling? The other drawback is finding someone to be that accountability partner. I think I need to start praying that God leads me to someone. Thank you for your insight throughout this series. Life experience sure provides us with a lot to share doesn’t it?

  14. I agree with so many points in your post, Beth. It breaks my heart when I hear Christians say they don’t have time to spend time with God daily. At least to start with, we can ALL carve 5 minutes out of our day.

  15. Very true, that number 1! I wouldn’t still be married if not in God’s Word everyday! He teaches me how to pray for His will, not what I understand or want …and to submit to Him and to my husband. Great points. Happy Wednesday! Megs

  17. It does heal and benefit my marriage Beth.
My motivation to persevere comes from the fact that I do not like what I become when I do not maintain fellowship with God and His word. I am not a nice person to be around because my flesh throws itself all over the place. So I stay with God so He can make me more like Him and a blessing to my husband, children and all who come in contact with me.
Thanks for sharing, and have a super blessed day!
